FACEBOOK NOW – A NEW PARADIGM IN NEWS

Facebook Now: A New Paradigm in News

When Mark Zuckerberg visited Ireland in early April, he found a country not just at the heart of Facebook’s international machine, but vital to its continued success in a rapidly evolving marketplace. From the beautiful glass fronted Grand Canal offices housing the European Middle East and African Headquarters to the equally beautiful server racks (I may be a little biased) of Facebooks’ massive Clonee Data Centre, Ireland has become a key strategic weapon in solving Facebook’s European and global challenges.

Mark’s extensive itinerary during his Ireland visit included meeting politicians, committees, staff and members of the community. However, one particular theme seemed to pop up time and time again – fakes news. How can Facebook address the issue of fake news? How can Facebook help promote and support trustworthy news content creation not just in Ireland but across Europe? How can we deliver accurate news on Facebook without detracting from Facebook’s core mission of connecting communities?

Mark challenged the European ecosystem as a whole and the Irish system in particular to rise to the challenge of solving this problem.

How should news appear on Facebook?
How can users interact with news without flooding news feeds?
How should the relationship between publishers and Facebook work?

That got me thinking…
